Chicago's Shedd Aquarium was the brainchild of the retired president of Marshall Field & Company, John G. Shedd. He believed that every major city in America should have an aquarium and invested two million dollars to create one in Chicago. He then added another million dollars to the construction budget to ensure that this site would be as impressive as the two other museums already existing in Grant Park, the Field Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago. The aquarium opened on December 19, 1929 with one freshwater display and thousands lined up to get the first peak inside the brilliant Beaux Arts building.

Within a year Shedd was the first ever inland aquarium with a saltwater display and was one of the largest aquariums in the world. Now, more than eighty years after the site opened its doors, Shedd has grown to twice its original size and is viewed by millions of tourists and Chicago residents each year. The Shedd Aquarium's mission is to make learning fun by connecting people with the living world. While you may go to art school or check valves daily as part of your job, few people really take the time to examine and understand the natural world. There are several different exhibits throughout the museum that allow you to view various elements of life under water. You can explore the Caribbean Reef, visit the Amazon Rising flooded forest, or take your kids to the Polar Play Zone.
